Residents’ safety fears over southern motorway extension By Emily O’Connell HALSWELL RESIDENTS’ have safety concerns over the $195 million Christchurch Southern Motorway Stage 2. Halswell Residents’ Association member Ross McFarlane said there are two issues which have been overlooked – cyclists and pedestrians having to cross four lanes of traffic and a longer drive for Halswell residents to get on the motorway. But the New Zealand Transport Agency’s principal project manager Geoff Griffiths said community consultation for the motorway started in 2010 and its main focus has been creating walking and cycling facilities. “Our plan is to install a pedestrian and cyclist refuge in the middle of the road at the four-lane approach to the proposed Halswell Junction Rd roundabout. This will give people a safe place to stop and wait, and also means they will only need to cross two lanes of Halswell Junction Rd at a time,” Mr Griffiths said. But Mr McFarlane doesn’t believe this is a safe option. He said it’s a complete oversight of the needs of pedestrians and cyclists in the Halswell area. “The crossing point proposed will be at a point where all traf-

Why should we be accepting a lower safety level than already exists and in an area that will have much greater traffic volumes?”
Mr McFarlane said. In response to the residents’ association’s concerns about how long it will take to get on the motorway, Mr Griffiths said NZTA believes the time savings for a large number of people will far outweigh what will probably be less than a minute of extra travel
time for local residents. The residents’ association has been in contact with Selwyn MP Amy Adams and she is writing a letter to the NZTA addressing the issues. The Christchurch Southern Motorway Stage 2 is on target to be ready by early 2020, which
will see a section of Main South Rd widened to four lanes and the project linked up to the Halswell Junction Rd end of the motorway. The motorway aims to halve travel time between Rolleston and Christchurch from 30 to about 15min.

The 69-year-old Avonhead resident has dedicated a lifetime to St Albans cricket but after five decades of administration work he’s decided to call it quits. On page 10, we talk with Jamie about his time at the club and why he’s decided to close his innings. He joined the club from Papanui High in January 1965 and played 521 games, took 1260 wickets and scored 7008 runs until March 2006. That’s not a bad scoreboard in anyone’s reckoning. And Jamie says he won’t be seen much around the club now either and he’ll be likely watching matches from a discreet distance. “I want to give them a chance to take the reins without me hovering around,” he says of the new administrators. - Barry Clarke

Supermarket wins booze battle By Bridget Rutherford A SUPERMARKET has won a three-year battle allowing it to display alcohol at the end of aisles and facing other groceries – for now. The Alcohol Regulatory and Licensing Authority has decided to allow New World Bishopdale to display its alcohol where it is, until it renews its off-licence next year. But medical officer of health Alistair Humphrey (right) said the decision would increase shoppers exposure to alcohol, resulting in more sales. “More sales of alcohol results in more harm, both directly and indirectly,” he said. Currently, the alcohol is displayed on an outer aisle. At the rear of the supermarket, it faces the dairy chillers, while at the other end, it is opposite the bakery products. Under new rules in the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012, supermarkets and grocery stores must restrict the display of alcohol to a single area.

The area should be out of the way so customers do not have to walk through it when doing their general shopping. In 2014, New World Bishopdale’s new owner Bond Markets, applied to the district licensing committee for a new off-licence under the new rules. During the hearing, concerns were raised about the alcohol display being in the general shopping area. But owner Nigel Bond said due to space restraints, there were no other options. The committee ruled to restrict the area, so Bond
Markets appealed the decision to ARLA, which ruled in its favour. Dr Humphrey then appealed ARLA’s decision to the High Court. Justice David Gendall then quashed ARLA’s ruling. After a Court of Appeal sitting, ARLA reconsidered the appeal against the district licensing committee’s original 2014 decision in July. ARLA said the supermarket’s off-licence was up for renewal next year. “The Authority does not consider it in the interests of justice that the parties are put
to the trouble and expense of having to renew the licence only to have to do so again almost immediately thereafter.” But Dr Humphrey said ARLA declined to take into account limiting exposure to alcohol. “By placing alcohol directly opposite a section of the supermarket which most shoppers frequent, exposure to alcohol, often significantly discounted, will be increased,” he said. Foodstuffs South Island retail general manager Tim Donaldson said he was “very pleased” with the decision.

The new roads, which are in Awatea Park and Quarry View subdivisions, have been named Romanee Lane, Muirhill St, Pegson Lane and Foden Lane. RICCARTON BUSH WORK The cycleway in Riccarton Bush has been upgraded, and more work is set to be done in the next few weeks. Better security cameras are going to be installed to increase monitoring, as well as speed calming measures, additional signage and markings, and new light poles. build kids’ confidence
Walter Lewthwaite is a team leader at Ricecube, which welcomes overseas people to the community and makes them feel at home In Halswell, close to a growing Asian community in Christchurch’s south-west, is Ricecube, a group which welcomes international people with food, friendship and help. South West Baptist Church has been running Ricecube for more than 10 years. The group has hosted hundreds of recent arrivals to New Zealand as they seek to find friends, understand the language, and find their way around New Zealand’s systems. This is just one of a number of group’s which the church runs for international visitors. Ricecube is family-friendly and caters for adults to pre-schoolers, with english levels from beginner to advanced. Every Friday, we meet over tea. Typically, we start with an Asian-style meal, which might have Chinese, Japanese, Korean or other flavours. Then there are games and

activities which both form and strengthen relationships. Finally, we have small study classes targeted at different ages and language levels. For our studies, we use the bible to learn what it has to say about life, and guest’s practice their english language skills in the company of others who are learning along with them. A good proportion of helpers are trained Educational Services Overseas Limited teachers, and increasingly the group is run by internationals. One of the great stories is of a Chinese lady, a new arrival in
Christchurch, who had heard of Ricecube, but only knew it was in Halswell. So she climbed on a Halswell bus and asked the driver to take her to “Ricecube”. He made an unscheduled stop, directed her through an alleyway to the venue, and said to say ‘hello’ to Jenna at the welcoming desk. Jenna happened to be his wife. The Chinese lady stayed for two years before returning home with many delightful memories of the welcome she experienced. Friendships develop and people meet outside of the Friday evening events to explore attractions in the city and countryside, develop CVs for job applications, work through the house-buying process, make contacts for schools, escort people through bureaucracies, and so on. And, of course, they all share food, with lots of fun and laughter.
By Emily O’Connell OLD TOYS, books, swan plants and baking were among the items on sale on Saturday at the first ever Kids’ Market in Halswell. The new Halswell Community Hub, which opened earlier this year, hosted the market. The hub facilitates groups such as the Halswell craft group and HIPPY, which supports children, young people and families. The hub also hosts youth group meetings and a casual coffee morning. About 25 tables run by children were at the market and a waiting list for tables was set-up due to demand. Halswell Community Market co-ordinator Kate Glassenbury said the idea started when her children needed to fundraise money for a snowboarding camp. A kids’ corner was then set-up as part of the monthly Halswell Community Market, and because of its popularity, the Kids’ Market was created. Mrs Glassenbury said the market is a great opportunity for children to build confidence,

St Peter’s restoration hits snag By Emily O’Connell A $600,000-plus funding bid to help the restoration of St Peter’s Anglican Church has hit a road block. But parish reverend Nick Mountfort is confident the problem is only a temporary hiccup. The Upper Riccarton church, which was consecrated in 1858, was damaged in the February 22, 2011, earthquake. City councillor Phil Clearwater said it was the staff view and the view of the committee that the church didn’t fit the heritage incentive fund. “There’s a strong acceptance around the table that St Peter’s Anglican Church plays a greater role in its community than

simply a local church,” Mayor Lianne Dalziel said.

opportunity to look at it in the future. The application was seeking funding for structural strengthening, priced at $905,000. The strengthening work is part of a larger $3.93 million plan to restore, upgrade, alter and extend the church. Rev Mountfort said the city council had a lot of demands on its money and he thought it was doing the best it could. He said he was looking forward to the restorations. “Well, I’m really excited about it because it’s a lovely church and it’s one of the historic churches in the Riccarton region,” Rev Mountfort said. St Peter’s has been paid $1.5 million from insurance and more than $600,000 has been donated but its still needs a further $2 million. Garden’s future unknown By Emily O’Connell THE RICCARTON West Community Garden is in need of two vital ingredients – a hand and a home. The garden, on Peverel St, has been an important source of vegetables for the community. Volunteer Loretta Te Paa said Housing New Zealand extended its lease until March 2019 but she doesn’t know what will happen afterwards. She wants the garden to stay where it is. “We’ve put a lot work into it down there. I know they were saying they were going to build there from when our lease expired but we’re not just sure at the moment,” Mrs Te Paa said. She said vegetables from the garden are delivered to about 70 families and are also left out for the community to take on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. She said the garden is great for the community but they don’t get many volunteers. “We’ve done so well, we want to keep it going,” Mrs Te Paa said.

Chef determined to teach men how to cook By Emily O’Connell AN INITIATIVE to help men cook will be launched in Riccarton later this month. Men2Cook founder and chef James Bradshaw started the programme in Perth after he noticed a lot of older men, whose wives had passed away, couldn’t cook for themselves. Mr Bradshaw wants to teach men how to cook basic but nutritious food and how to cook for one person on a budget. “I just want to teach them how to live and survive. I know that sounds strange but going from quite a comfortable background in Perth, into some of these people’s houses who had quite nice houses (then) to see the state they had got in, say six months since their wife had died, it’s quite eye-opening actually. It’s emotional really,” he said. Mr Bradshaw has lived in New
Zealand for nine years, and has been working to set up a programme here for four months. The Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board has approved a grant of $2500 from its 2017-18 discretionary response fund to the Oak Development Trust for the programme. The grant will be used to buy utensils for the pilot programme, which starts on October 27 at the Riccarton Baptist Church. The five-week pilot course will cost $25 and be held during the day, although if the programme proves popular, a night-time version might be created. He said the course helps men to not only cook but socialise too. Students lead safety initiative By Emily O’Connell A BID by Christchurch Boys’ High students to make the school’s Kahu Rd entrance safer has paid off. The Fendalton-WaimairiHarewood Community Board approved the request for a ‘no-stopping’ restriction to be implemented at the entrance to ensure better visibility. A junior CBHS student was nearly hit by a car exiting the school so he reported it to the student executive council. With help from teachers, the council put together a proposal for the community board. The council’s deputy chairman Mitchell Redman said the area on Kahu Rd was an accident waiting to happen. Mitchell doesn’t think anyone would be against making a ‘nostopping’ restriction as it would only eliminate two or three car parks. “I can’t imagine that there will

to see people from the community get involved. “I don’t know the roll of CBHS at the moment but there’s a significant number of people and I for one don’t want to be responsible for some form of accident to occur,” Mr Cartright said.
By Emily O’Connell THE HALSWELL Residents’ Association has made a submission in support of the city council’s move to ban the sale of vehicles on the road. Under the proposed Traffic and Parking Bylaw 2017, people would be banned from parking vehicles on a road or parking spot to offer it for sale unless it was being used for day-to-day travel. The main reason was because it distracted motorists. The bylaw would combine two current traffic-related bylaws. Halswell Residents’ Associa-
tion secretary David Hawke said cars for sale parked on the side of a road are a safety hazard and decrease the community value. Mr Hawke posted on the Halswell Community Group Facebook page and asked for residents thoughts on the issue. Most responded negatively, saying they didn’t see the harm. He believed people only made a fuss if they were unhappy and people who might agree with the ban would be too scared to post their thoughts. Submissions to city council on the bylaw closed yesterday.

Move to front row pays off for Shilo St Andrew’s skipper makes New Zealand Schools side By Andrew King SPEED AND power are two attributes needed in the modernday hooker. But 18-year-old Shilo Klein has something else too: He’s a natural midfielder. The St Andrew’s College student, who moved from second-five to hooker last year, was one of 25 named in the New Zealand Schools side to play three games against two Australian and a Fijian team in Sydney. He didn’t play in the … to the Fijian Schools side on Thursday. Christ’s College first XV captain and centre Isaiah Punivai was also named in the New Zealand Schools side. Klein was also included in the Crusaders Academy for next year and is looking forward to making a career out of rugby. He weighs in at 105kg and is 180cm. He’s well-suited to the forward pack, first XV co-coach Mike Johnston said. “The skills he learnt at secondfive has helped out as a hooker. He has developed some really

good passing skills and lines to run out in those wider channels,” he said. “We thought he would be a good fit in that position and that has been proved correct with his selection in the New Zealand Schools side.” Klein, who was born in Sacramento, California, said it was a no-brainer to move into the forward pack. “I had a lot of feedback that this position would suit my style of play. I played like a forward in the backline, I ran straight and looked for good physical goforward,” he said. It took him a few attempts to
feel comfortable in the middle of a scrum, but now he loves it. “In my first scrum, I felt claustrophobic, but I got used to it,” he said. Klein captained St Andrew’s this year, leading them to fifth in the UC Championship and third in the co-ed cup in the New Zealand Barbarians first XV championship. He moved to Christchurch when he was three with his parents, Howard and Wendy. “I play the sport in one way or another all year round, as I play touch and sevens also. I really want to play professionally some day,” he said.

Jamieson pulls up stumps at St Albans SPORTS By Andrew King ST ALBANS Cricket Club’s season will begin this weekend. After 52 years as a club member – 44 of those as president and chairman – Alan Jamieson, 69, has pulled has pulled stumps on his administration career to allow a new crop of management to take it into the future. He may not be at the ground for the opening game – but you might see him watching the action from afar. Jamieson oversaw the merger between the St Albans Women’s Cricket Club and men’s club in 1977, one of the first clubs to do so in the city, saw the coming and going of a number of professional players at the club and watched

Chris Harris, Chris Martin and Mark Priest go on to play for New Zealand. He said he can’t take credit for Martin’s batting style, which is famous around cricket grounds both here and abroad. “He was a number 11 the day he joined the club from Christchurch Boys’,” he laughed. Jamieson joined the club from Papanui High in January 1965 and played 521 games, took 1260 wickets and scored 7008 runs until March 2006. Jamieson played “on the front foot” both on and off the pitch resulting in a few run-ins with
cricket bosses. “Lee Germon and I have had some fierce conversations over the years, I didn’t win too many of those,” he said with a chuckle. He said the club had become a bit “nomadic” after the 2014 redevelopment of Hagley Oval, but the overall end result was a fantastic international cricket ground. Jamieson said the lure of the game will be hard to stay away from, but as he did after finishing his playing days, he will watch from a distance.
“I used to watch from afar after I finished playing, behind trees and in cars, because, you know how it is. If you are hanging around, soon you are called up to fill in then your back playing,” he said. The main thing he will miss is the communication with all the players, officials, coaches and management of the club, he said. “I have noticed since I have been away the communication has stopped. It remains to be seen if the winter month quietness will reflect the summer months,” he said. One of the hardest and
best moments in his long tenure share a common date: January 30, 2009. The clubrooms, in Hagley Oval, suffered an arson attack at about 7am, burning it to the ground. Jamieson said it was the worst moment of his time at the club standing on the field watching his beloved clubrooms billow smoke and collapse in the inferno. “But rebuilding it brought the club together. The club rallied and it made it stronger,” he said. Now retired, Jamieson said he has time to do something else rather than cricket.

Pupils, parents join in Ilam cultural day By Emily O’Connell ILAM SCHOOL’S biennial cultural day saw about 500 pupils dress in outfits which represented their 62 different nationalities. The day began with a whole school assembly, followed by a parade down nearby roads and through Canterbury University. Pupils then took part in a concert, performing an item special to their culture. Parents brought in traditional food for a shared lunch. Principal Paul Dolan said a highlight was having parents join in the celebrations as well, making it a community event. “Some of the parents wore their traditional dress on that day. It’s quite emotional, parents stand their with their arms around each other with tears rolling down their faces as the children are performing. It’s just a lovely, lovely day,” Mr Dolan said. He said the day, which is part of their cultural inquiry unit, fits in with the school vision of ‘I belong’. “That’s not just cultural or

Quarry planting draws crowd By Emily O’Connell SHOVEL BY shovel load, 160 volunteers helped place 2000 native plants in Halswell Quarry Park at the weekend. Volunteers ranged from Buddha’s Light International Association, the Association of Filipino Tradesmen in NZ Inc, Brotherhood of Guardians Council New Zealand and the local Rotary Club. Due to the high turnout of volunteers, all planting and spreading of mulch was completed within hours.

BROUGHT TO YOU BY... KUMARA, ORANGE AND PISTACHIO CAKE Ingredients 1-2 Orange Kumara, medium size 1 cup Pistachio nuts, shelled 1¼ cups Sugar 4 Eggs 2 tsp Oranges, rind ¼ cup Flour 1 tsp Ground cardamom Orange drizzle
CARAMELISED ASPARAGUS AND BACON Ingredients 16 Asparagus spears 4 rashers Streaky bacon, smoked 2 Tbsp Olive oil 2 Tbsp Maple syrup 1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce 1 Tbsp Sesame seeds Directions Preheat the oven to 190 deg C. Line a large roasting pan with baking paper.
Place a wire rack on top. Snap the tough ends off the asparagus. Cut the stalks to measure about 15cm. If the bacon is thick, run the blunt edge of a heavy knife along the bacon to ‘stretch’ it. Take four spears of asparagus and wrap the bacon around the bunch. Place on the rack, bacon ends down. Repeat with the remaining asparagus and bacon. Combine the oil, syrup and sauce. Brush thoroughly over the asparagus and bacon. Bake for 15-20min, until the bacon is cooked.

Place saucepan back on the warm element for 2min to remove any excess moisture from kumara. Push kumara through a coarse sieve into a bowl. Chop pistachio nuts finely. Add to kumara with orange rind. Separate eggs and beat yolks with 1/2 cup of measured sugar.

A family affair at local gym When Ignite Fitness was set up at the Papanui Club in early 2016, the challenge was to create an exercise atmosphere that appealed to a diverse market. One of the areas identified was the involvement of family members and groups, manager of the fitness centre Eddie Kerrigan says. “We must have done something right as we now have numbers of families who have joined up. The environment at Ignite Fitness is a safe, non-threatening one in which parents can be confident that all their family members will be looked after in a professional and caring manner.” There are three families of four, four family groups of three, and around 25 family groups of two currently signed up, Eddie says. Two of those families are the Smith family and the Mackintosh family, and Eddie spoke to them about why they joined Ignite Fitness, and what they got out of it. There were a variety of reasons for joining. These included improving fitness, losing weight, keeping joints and limbs moving, stalling the effects of ageing and family bonding. The handy location of the gym was also an important factor, they said. Both families said they went to the gym two to four times a week, depending on
their school and work schedules. Asked what activities they enjoyed most, in order of popularity they said these were resistance training, cardio exercise and circuit classes, though they liked taking part in all of the activities and exercises. Depending on the activity, they sometimes competed with one another to see who could achieve the most, and both sets of parents tried to be an inspiration for their families. Both families said they had gained a number of health benefits since starting at Ignite Fitness. Strength and fitness were two key beneflts, but there was also pain management and all-over physical stability. In addition to the physical benefits, they enjoyed socialising with other gym members, and their self-esteem improved. “We are delighted that families like the Smiths and the Mackintoshes get so much enjoyment from coming to our gym, and new families and groups are always more than welcome to join,” Eddie says. Ignite Fitness is open 5.30am-9.30pm Monday to Friday and 5.30am-6.30pm weekends and public holidays.
